The ball de Cercolets of Vilanova i la Geltrú was revived in 1982. “Cercolets” are like arches made from broken hoops and are decorated with ribbons and flowers or vegetables. (Similar to the Garlands used in the Garland dances of Britain).
The dance is one of the oldest dances from the Penedès region and has an agricultural background, associated with harvest celebrations.
The Ball de Cercolets uses 10 dancers, in Vilanova it is danced by young girls between seven and nine years of age. In Vilanova and Sitges, the Ball de Cercolets there are two additional characters, the Foreman and a small boy or girl called the Angel. The choreography explores the shapes and figures that can be made with the “cercolets”, and for the final figure, La Bota, the Angel is lifted onto the shoulders of the central dancer and with sword raised recites a short poem finishing with the phrase “Visca la Festa Major!” (Long live the Festa Major!) to which the crowd replies “Visca!” In the dance there is also a section where the foreman and the dancers exchange poems about the Festa or Patron Saint.
The costume is white trousers and shirt, a blue or red “faldilleta” (short kilt), bell pads (“camalls”) around the ankles, a blue or red “faixa” (a wide cotton cummerbund) around the waist, a scarf across the body and espadrilles with blue and red laces. The Angels is dressed in a white robe.
The music for the Ball de Cercolets is played on “flabiol” and “tamborí” (a type of pipe and tabor) and “sac de gemecs” (Catalan bagpipes).
