Ribbon and Maypole dances can be found throughout Europe and Catalonian, and are related to the May tree dancers in which girls used to dance around the May tree to ensure that it would bear much fruit. There are several different versions in Catalonian, for example the Ball de Gitanes.
Vilanova’s Ball de Cintes has the maypole replaced by raised arm of a boy with the girls dancing around him plaiting their ribbons down his arm to court him. This version originally from the village of Les Presses in the Garrotxa region of Northern Catalonian.
As we had no reference as to the costume we made one inspired in the Mediterranean stile in which white predominate. Each of the 12 girls wears white blouse, a white skirt trimmed in blue and red, and blue and red espadrilles. The boy wears white trousers and shirt, read “faixa” (wide cotton cummerbund) and a headscarf.
Several “gralla” players (short wide-bore shawm) and a snare drummer play the music for the dance.
The dance was revived by the Agrupació de Balls Populars in 1986.
