The dwarves or big heads are a popular all over Catalonian. According to the historian Joan Amades, the current version date back to the fourteenth century, but earlier references to this are known where they appeared in the religious processions for the feast of Corpus, where they had a theatrical or religious features.
The dwarves or big heads normally accompany the giants but in some places they appear alone. Some towns have them with faces of celebrities or other famous people.
In Vilanova they have a long tradition and they appeared with the other dances in the Festa Major, up to the Civil War. In 1948 when the group “Foment Vilanoví” decided to restore the giants they also raised money from the populace, to make the dwarves. These appeared for the first time on the 5th August 1949.
Initially they had no choreography of their own, and their dance was based on that of the dwarves of Olot. But in 1981 Miquel González of the “Grallers de L’Acord” composed new music especially for them and Maite Belascoain provided them with their own choreography, in same year new dwarves were constructed, some based on the originals, some new.
There are 18 dwarves each with different costumes. For example: “La Nena” (the baby girl), “La Gitana” (the gypsy), “La Catalana” (the Catalan girl), etc. They are all lead by two mace-bearers.
Their carriers became members of the Agrupació de Balls Populars in 1987.
