This dance is a popular dance in the Penedés region, possibly originating in Valencia, and can be found in most of the cities with an important Festa Major. The Ball de Panderos is a relatively modern dance from middle of the 18th century and does not have the historical features of the Ball de Bastons or Pastorets, etc.
Originally 12 men danced it but today 12 females exclusively dance it.
It’s a bright and colourful dance. The dancers play their tambourines and make seven different figures: “El Quadre” (the square), “Els Platerets” (the cymbals), “La Serp” (the snake), “La Travessa” (the crossing), “El Corrandillo”, “La Creu” (the cross) and “La Jota”.
The costume is white trousers and shirt, blue or red wide "faixa" (a wide cotton cummerbund), blue or red "faldilleta" (short kilt), flowered headscarf and a scarf across the breast.
The music is normally played on "fabliol i tambori" (a type of pipe and tabor) and a "sac de gemecs" (Catalan bagpipes) but sometimes the dance is accompanied by a group of “gralla” players and snare drum.
The dance was revived in 1984.
